My scanners didn't have such options (or at least not good ones!) but I am 
sure that others probably did.

I wouldn't necessarily call it laziness.  Avoiding typos would be another
motivator for such a project.  I can remember spending hours typing in TI
Basic programs from magazines or books just to wind up with a typo (or
several) that I never could get tracked down.
