Buddy of mine has an old radio with the tubes -- he had to go to the Russian 
military last time he needed new tubes of the type needed! But he can tell
the  difference in sound you allude to (I can't -- tin ears)

It's his baby that even a divorcing ex couldn't touch. .  :D
