Reading about your Dads situation when seasons change had me thinking about the
Microwave radio system where I worked.
When the leaves began to appear on the trees , the microwave receiver level had
to be increased,
The opposite when the trees shed their leaves in the Fall, the received signal
was too high and the level had to be lowered  for the data between both ends of
the path to work properly.
