That makes sense except when you put something out, and raise the flag, how do you know it is not still up because he's not been yet? Now it is very rare that there is anything outgoing in the box but, back when I was a kid, it seemed like we had mail going out and coming in almost daily... bills, letters, etc., that were commonplace before the electronic age.
