I suppose this is a big part of the problem, so few people are
involved in these old BBS type systems that software is rarely
updated for it.

Maybe as the Big Social sites get less popular they will make
a bit of a comeback.

Funny, thinking back, there were 6 or 7 BBS systems in town here
but all limited to local users unless someone wanted to call in
by (then) expensive long distance to access them, and most did
not have many users. Then the Global BBS feeds came out where you
could talk to people all over the world and it was amazing at the
time. These days that wouldn't mean anything to most people.
