XPost: alt.philosophy       From: donlhumphries@bigpond.com              Your very statement is philosophical.       (1) What is Philosophy? - The Love of Wisdom, which itself requires some       defining.       (2) Philosophy is the only study which is Sceptical about everything, and       this has value in itself, especially as a counter to the dogmatism of       Religion.       (3) Philosophy is Rational, with Logic as its basis.       (4) There can be Theoretical Philosophy (speculation), and Practical       Philosophy (sagacity).       (5) Science is Natural Philosophy, but too much Thinking can be harmful if       it detracts from Empiricism, ie. experiments, and collection of data.       (6) Philosophy can be a hobby for those so inclined; but it should be the       Key Study at colleges/universities.       (7) The Aim of Philosophy is not to come to conclusions, as much as to       question assumptions.       (8) Daily life demands that we can't be sitting around philosophising all       the time - but even here some thought, prior to action, can be beneficial;       though reflex or instinctive action is not ruled out.       (9) The human race is probably a transitory phenomenon, and the universe as       a whole cares nothing for either our thoughts or our existence.       (10) Philosophy encourages Prudence, and the human race will survive longer       than otherwise, if some foresight into possible consequences guide our       collective action.       ===============================       "Harlan Osier" |
