I think you might be right, the Bible is trying to stop people from
   thinking.

One of my major problems with religion (particularly Christianity) is
that it seems to want to restrict "dangerous" questions, leaving the
"answers" to be doled out by either the Church (Catholicism), the
pastor/minister (Baptism), or, the publisher of the Bible (unattached
   Christians).

Does Christianity ever say "go out into the world and find your own
answers. And if you don't follow the life of Christ, that's OK,
hopefully you'll still reach heaven anyways"?

I seem to think that Buddhism is a little more forgiving; here's what
we're trying to achieve (Nirvana), here's how some people did it (the
Enlightened Ones), we'll help you as best we can to attain the goal
(teaching), but ultimately, it's up to you, and you might find a
   different way.

I saw a crochet pattern in some rural craft store that read "Christ, let
me be your sheep" (or something like that). Which I find very insulting
to humanity, the idea that "Oh, we can't figure it out, let's just let
God decide, because I want to watch TV now." Very passive.

Same, too, with the Genesis story of the Tree of Knowledge...why
wouldn't God want man to know things? Why is it wrong to question
   everything, including God itself?

I think it's because most major religions are designed to control
people, and the first part of controlling anyone is getting them to
accept that what you say is right and should be followed without question.

Of course, Lovecraft suggested that to question reality is to delve into
madness, but that's all right by me, asylums are cool.
