Judging by all the childish finger pointing that goes on in religion I'd say
that that's most likely the case.

It's more likely the Catholic church simply decided that the lies in the
bible were incompatible with their own lies and agendas.

Most of the ones who suffered were the women healers and herbalists who were
falsely accused of being witches. Many of those were only guilty of owning
property (after being widowed by the state) which the religious clergy (who
were also the government at that time) wanted to acquire for themselves.
By killing the widows they got the properties for free.
There are very few documented cases where normal people have been harmed by
so called witches.
If you have some then please site them.

Yes, by convincing people that he/they are supreme and getting you to
worship him/them, and then getting you to persecute others in their name,
just like the god of the bible has done so easily with you.

If God is omnipotent then he should be able to make it so that both can
live.

Why not sacrifice ones jewellery or other belongings instead, or ones time
and effort for a worthy cause?

It's because that's what the ancient pagans and polytheists used to do and
that's what christianity adopted for it's own tradition.
