In this day of GPS, ships are more likely to run aground due to idiot
captains than getting lost. In other words, lighthouses might well be "no
longer needed." And, if it costs to maintain them, then a government
decision not to spend public money on things we don't need is exactly the
   correct one.

As for this "famous" lighthouse: if it is indeed visited by 500,000 tourists
a year (that's an *average* of over 1300 per day, can that be right?) then
surely the community and businesses that benefit from the tourism can cover
the costs. I don't see why former auto workers flipping burgers on the
night shift in order not to lose their family home should see their tax
dollars spent on tourist attractions (at best) in other parts of the
   country.
