   I have to admit that I'm torn: as a conservative I hate to ask the   
   government to stick its nose into a matter of less than vital importance to   
   the country but, on the other hand, commercials are turning into the a-hole   
   neighbors who have the party cranked to 11 at 4 AM and shout obscenities in   
   reply to requests to turn it down a notch so the kids can get some sleep   
   before school.  In other words, somebody had to call the police.   
      
   The sad thing about this is that most people past puberty could conduct   
   themselves in a manner that would placate all but the most fanatically   
   offendable, but the broadcasters will come up with some truly incredible   
   story about how the principles that underlie civilization will be shattered   
   if a silent moment of emotion can't be followed by a Sham-WOW! at ten times   
   the power level.   
      
   In the end it will be yet another game of cat and mouse, with regulators   
   trying to find loopholes, claim that it can't be done, or insist that they   
   need viewers to pay a *mandatory* extra $7.95 per month "sound pressure   
   level equalization service fee."
