Pity. Would have been a nice change from Global Warming.

Bell Fibe TV became available in my building some time back and they've been
mailing me offers monthly (or maybe even more often) since. I have answered
two phone calls from telemarketers pitching it, but suspect that they've
been calling a lot more than that. I wonder how much money Bell would be
making if they weren't spending all that money on marketing... especially on
mailing and calling people who have said no - either explicitly or by not
responding to repated offers. This is monopoly thinking ('we can increase
profits by increasing costs and getting approval to increase rates in order
to maintain our return on investment') except the day of the monopoly
investing that money in improved service is long gone.

I did the numbers with the last telemarketer: by the time the cost of
increasing the monthly transfer limit was included, Bell's phone/internet/TV
bundle cost about the same as my Bell bare-minimum phone line, Primus
internet, and Rogers TV service... and therefore more than a
Bell/TekSavvy/Rogers combo which I would be happy with if I wanted to change
ISPs to save a couple of bucks a month.

... and I told the telemarketer that there would have to be HUGE savings
(in the ongoing price, not just the promotional period price) for me to
consider going back to Bell as an ISP. As a former Sympatico customer
myself and as an IT consultant with customers who are with Bell today I can
honestly attest that there is a special level of service hell that awaits
people who deal with the giant phone and/or cable monopolies.
