Until recently, we had an 11-year-old modem, on the same "legacy" plan
that everyone's talking about. One day about 6 months ago it went
flakey, and so the oul' Woman calls Bell (the service is in her name)
and gives the details, and (surprisingly) they responded knowledgeably,
and the modem came back on and I said "tell them it's slow, too" --
because it had been, it was down to like 3 Mb or a bit more -- and the
service lady says "oh, hang on" and bumped the speed up right there
while we were on the 'phone to 7 Mb. They sent us a new modem, of
course, same speed. The service lady had never heard of the old
Speedstream that went flakey. The service lady never once went into that
"are you using the phone cable that came with the modem?" or any of the
other scripted shit. "Reinstall your system software," remember that
one? "Oh, you're using a _router_?"

The moral of all that rambling is that you can call Bell and try to get
your speed bumped up. We have a Bell box of some sort on the corner of
the street, but we're also only 3 blocks from the CO here in our little
corner of Anglophone tranquility. Good luck with that crazy Marois woman.
