PK, it's not that I'm opposed to these non-discrimination hiring rules.
I'm all for them. Yet, I have to accept that small private businesses
will sometimes ignore these rules and they will hire according to
their own racial preferences. That's just the way it is.

Yet, while this is happening, we also have to bear in mind that
any and all races and ethnics groups within Canada and the US
have a right to set up shop. So, while an individual small business
may be of one kind, you will find small businesses of another kind
and on the whole they make up a multi-cultural mosaic of small
businesses. And I believe this is perfectly fine! In cases like these
I would only intervene if a certain race of people, or ethnic group were
prevented from setting up shop in the first place.

Now, we also have to consider "freedom of association." If you
want one club for one set of folks, and another exists for another
kind, even if each club is of a different kind, then on the whole they, too,
create that multicultural experience. Most clubs will also have
special events where they invite others from different groups to
come help celebrate a truly multi-culural event. In these cases if
a club were refused to be allowed based on their race or ethnicity,
they I would consider that a breech of the right to association.

I think people of one kind or another should be allowed to have
their own respective clubs in which they can study, develop and
preserve their own cultural heritage which they then can share via
a multicultural festival where they can show off the best they have
to offer...be that through dance, song, stories, food and sharing
   of information.

Personally, I'd find life extremely boring if we were all the same.
I live in a world of colour, it's not black or white, but full of
colour...from palest pink, to various shades of browns, reds
yellows and blacks. Hey, one day we may even meet little
green men that would add to our mosaic. ;-)

My country is not a melting pot, but rather a fresh, lively
and healty tossed salad! If given the choice between
that blah gruel vs. a fresh tossed salad...I'd take that salad
   any day! ;-)

   Take care,
   Heidi
