   It does seem pretty bizarre. I'm guessing it's just some guy(s)   
   blind-dialing a name in the book and trying to get a SIN (and DOB) --   
   that's pretty much all they need to open a bank account and then they're   
   well on the way to identity theft. My instinct would be to give out a   
   fake SIN and see what eventuates.   
      
   Collection agencies are trying to, er, _collect_, they already know who   
   you are and how much you owe, and to whom. Telemarketers want to sell   
   stuff, they're not going to risk alienating you, at least, not right off   
   the top before you've insulted their mother's virtue.
