   Former Montreal 'escort queen' screwed by taxman : CRA SOTW

   MONTREAL -- She managed to dodge prison, but times are still tough for   
   Montreal's former escort queen Joelle Chelala, who says she'll declare   
   bankruptcy after selling her assets and ditching her madams.   
      
   Chelala was a real-estate agent by day while managing 40 escort agencies by   
   night from an office on downtown St. Catherine Street West.   
      
   She tells QMI Agency that the pot of gold has run out.   
      
   "It's useless to spend money to defend (against Revenue Quebec)," Chelala said   
   in a telephone interview.   
      
   "Even my lawyer doesn't understand how they do their calculations."   
      
   Her latest assessment shows that she owes Revenue Quebec $1.1 million.   
      
   The tax ruling came just days after she received an absolute discharge on   
   pimping charges.   
      
   The taxman says Chelala didn't pay federal and provincial sales tax when she   
   ran her network of escort agencies.   
      
   To repay the debt, authorities confiscated 125 pieces of Chelala's jewelry,   
   including a Playboy Bunny pendant and chain, a Harley Davidson gold pendant,   
   an 18-carat gold ring and a silver, diamond-encrusted Rolex watch.   
      
   "I'm going to go bankrupt," Chelala complained.   
      
   She said she's turned the page on her old life and now works as a full-time   
   real-estate agent. She has also adopted a pseudonym on some posters to avoid   
   being recognized.   
      
   She got into trouble on Grand Prix weekend in 2011 when police carried out 11   
   raids and seized $700,000 in cash, plus gold bars and jewelry.   
      
   Her father, George Chelala, also faces a $1.1 million tax bill. Revenue Quebec   
   says he ran the escort network during the day before his daughter took it over   
   at night.
