   I was in court on a collection issue representing  a friend of mine -   
   collecting not being collected from - but soon after the conversation turned   
   to what his son was doing - being a member of an elite force in a far away   
   country where it is 120 in the shade in the summer, and it got me to   
   thinking:   
      
   Why are our forces in Afghanistan?   
      
   What relationship is there between Nato membership and Afghanistan?   
      
   Is the gap between our cultural experience and theirs so fundamental that we   
   will not be able to understand let alone change theirs?   
      
   How can killing a lot of Afghans help us win the popularity contest that a   
   pacification campaign requires.   
      
   I really have no answer to any of these questions.
