"Hokey" to me is what I call 'over acting' and/or 'unrealistic'
situations created by the director to 'later in the movie' put everyone in
jeopardy. For example, don't leave your guns around if you are in a possible
dangerous situation where one might need them. The danger is the key and the
story line makes that obvious. And then the actors leave their protection
(the guns) in a place they cannot get to and because of that they are left
in jeopardy. A movie like this, to me, is "Hokey" because it is directed at
adult audiences. "Old Yeller" was, in my opinion, directed at children so,
to me, is not hokey for that reason.

I may have seen "2001: A space Odyssey " and "Dr. Strangelove" but can't
remember the story line so cannot comment.
