Lots of ISPs in North America are dropping usenet. I "believe" Rogers
was the first in Canada to do it. They're not making enough money to
warrant keeping those servers, with all that storage capacity, running.
It also removes their responsibily for copyright violations due to
people downloading from the binary groups. No music, no movies, no
porn, no lawsuits. Most people you talk to have never heard of
newsgroups, anyway. There are several free newservers around for text
groups, and a few pay-for-use servers for binary groups. Most of the
pay servers have more groups and longer retention times than the free
   ones offered by ISPs.

Nevertheless, it'll be a long while before I put any personal
information on Facebook or others of that ilk. My twice-yearly comments
   will remain here.
