   I don't think that the American public would ever actually get to know. I   
   think what would actually happen is that it would become apparent very   
   early on - long before it came anywhere close actually to happening. The   
   problem would be dealt with in one internal way or another. And any   
   notion of the US government turning dictatorial would be dismissed as the   
   stuff of swivel-eyed conspiracy theorists and people who walk past   
   government buildings with aluminium foil wrapped round their heads.   
      
   *My* point isn't what would happen in a fight between government and   
   citizens, but rather that the defence of citizens rights lies in law and   
   not armament. Justification for going armed is legitimate, but it isn't   
   that.   
      
   That is also the danger: when change happens too gradually for people to   
   notice.
