It is ultimately based on the same common law as we have here in the UK.
You probably do in Oz, too. Whatever it is called elsewhere, here going
on to someone's land with a firearm without their permission is called
"armed trespass" and is a serious offence. I think the minimum sentence
on conviction is 5 years (which as a custodial sentence is enough to bar
the convict from ever being granted a firearm or shotgun certificate
again, much as US law bars felons from buying handguns).

Erm, no. You have authority to shoot on land A and B, and you shoot
something on B from a position on A. That is OK. You can retrieve the
carcase. You'd only be unable to get your game if it expired on land C
where you had no permission or other right of access.

One of the questions on the "Level 1 Deer Stalking Certificate"
qualification (this qualifies the holder to supply venison to game
dealers for sale to the general public, and covers legal and ecological
aspects of hunting as well as shooting), is what do you do if you come
across a critically injured, but still living, deer by the roadside.
You're not authorised to use a firearm to dispatch it, because it is a
   road and crown property.
