I once had the experience of the local EI office giving out information
from my private file to someone who meant me harm. That file included my
list of job applications. The way I learned of this was one of those
potential employers, who was going to hire me, phoned and told me that I
would not get the job because a person had phoned and threatened to sue
them if I was hired. very strange stuff, since the person who phoned them
was a "creditor" of sorts and was supposedly interested in getting money
from me. Regrettably, I was unemployed for quite a while longer....

   Oh yes... the EI office...

I filed a Privacy Complaint with the federal government, and they
investigated and sure enough determined that my privacy rights had indeed
been illegally violated by an employee in that office who was trying to
curry favor with the bank loans officer, who just happened to be my
"creditor". However, there is no punishment for a federal government
employee that violates the Privacy Act, no justice or compensation for
anyone who is harmed by it. No mercy on the "debt" that I then had
difficulty paying. I did get a nice letter from the federal government,
though. They were very sorry it happened. That's more than they usually
   do.

I guess Johhny and canucky would say it's all my own fault because I
failed to jump through all the right hoops at all the right times, and lay
down a solid foundation for future security. I also didn't join the local
Masons Lodge, which could have helped with legal and political
   connections. Alas.
