From: AlanBaggett@volcanomail.com              Story moves secret Santas to help family : CRA SOTW              Part 2 of a 2 part story.              COBOURG - Some members of the local community, along with Revenue Canada, have       responded to a single parent's plight, and Christmas now looks a little       brighter for a Cobourg family.              Because of a story published in Northumberland Today last week Revenue Canada       has now paid all the back child tax credit monies it hadn't paid Eletha       Varrette since the fall to help with the care of two young boys she cares for       in her home, the Cobourg        woman.              Before that she had been told things wouldn't get straightened out until the       New Year, leaving nothing for Christmas presents for her young charges, and       the need to continue to ration food from the food bank.              In September, after Varrette had cared for the her grandson for seven years       and her great-nephew for three, Revenue Canada Taxation surprised her with a       letter stating the monthly $900 cheque she was receiving was being       discontinued, following an audit.        Varrette said she never received the audit paperwork required by the federal       agency to maintain the income to look after the children, and she spent the       next few months trying to verify, with the help of various agencies and the       local MP's office, that        she has been caring for, and continues to care for, the boys.              In desperation, and with Christmas looming, Varrette contacted this newspaper,       which in turn contacted Revenue Canada.              "I received a cheque for $2,083," she said about Revenue Canada's reversal of       a September decision to cut the funding upon which she relies each month to       care for seven-year-old Dawson and three-year-old John Charles Archer.              "I know that sounds like a lot," but the bills that need to be paid and money       borrowed add up to $1,981, she said in an interview Monday.              That eats up most of the Revenue Canada cheque.              So, she said, when someone came to her door over the weekend with a box of       food, including vegetables and cereal, it was very welcome.              Northumberland Today has also received a request from another community member       who is helping the Varrette family directly with Christmas presents.              "It's awesome," Varrette said of the community response.              Things will still be tight for Christmas, but there will be a celebration with       presents for the youngsters and "it's looking better for the New Year,"       Varrette added.              valerie.macdonald@sunmedia.ca              -----------------------------------------------------------        Miss a Tax Tale Miss a lot!        Visit the CRA SOTW Library at http://canada.revenue.agency.angelfire.com        ------------------------------------------------------------        Alan Baggett – Tax Collector’s Bible - http://taxcollectorsbible.com/               --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
