   I think at the time there had been a series of crashes related to   
   failure of the engine controllers in militraty aircrft. Thrust variations   
   can be nasty but some scenarios involved the thing failing "energically",   
   with initial shrapnel getting into the engine, and more shrapnel peppering   
   the aircrew as they eject. Think dropping a dod at Mach 2.
