Yeah, there is such a thing.  It's called feline immunodeficiency virus
(FIV).  It is contageous, however, there are vaccines for it that work well
in cats.  Your kitty was probably purring because he knew what was going to
happen and was at ease with it.  At least he is no longer suffering.

Now I need to get Felix to lose weight.  I am worried that he will develop
diabetes and that is bad enough in a human.  It's heartbreaking in an
animal.  I have cut down his food a lot, but with only 13' of walkable space
where he lives now, not much he can do for exercise.  I hope that will
change soon.

Yeah, that happens.  Felix has no desire to go outside.  It's warm inside
and he knows where the food bowl is. ;)
