Possibly.  My experience with them is that many pet cats have a tendency to
do a lot of things that either don't seem to have purpose, or that are done
out of spite.

On the other hand, for a while I had a neighbor who had a cat that was a
very good mouser.  He kept the small rodent population down.  My opinion of
him is that he certainly had purpose.  ;)
