I can imagine.

My grandmother developed modest crippling arthritis in her  
hands that gradually contorted. She also had some in the other  
joints of the body. Gold and cortisone injections were the  
norm.  She was however still quite capable to walk with only  
the assistance of a cane.

Her youngest daugher is also now experiencing similar, except  
she doesn't have the hand/joint deformaties - just pain all  
over.  She is unable to lift her legs suitably to navigate  
stairs and had arranged her living to be on one level of her 3- 
level house.
