Maybe the stock was contaminated in transit or in storage before hitting the
shops?  Can you notice anything else like a common manufacturer for those
discs?

I wouldn't be surprised that known compromised discs end up in those bargain
bins in department stores.

Do your bad DVD purchases span a wide number of years?  ..or are the bad ones
specific to a narrow purchasing period and/or source?
