As far as I know, piano keys have always been made with wood and laminated with ivory and now plastic. A carved king/queen would only have the white on one side. Ideally, you might like two keys that you can place back to back (each one cut thinner? ..or remove the white part from one key and put it on the other?) so that you have the white on two opposite sides for one chess piece?
