I've had [1] a few people suggesting that a book that they are  
returning was a gift purchased in my shop, never read it, and  
they didn't have a receipt, and were hoping for an exchange or  
credit at the full price and [2] others claiming that the books  
they are bringing in are "brand new" and were hoping for the  
full price in cash.  Sheesh.  Sorry, but without a receipt,  
nothing is going to happen.

Yeah.. and the thief would come up with some kind of BS story  
why the receipt is missing or something.

That's the bare minimum approach, and wise.  The receipt is the  
key.
