   Pella Shoreline Restoration
   Saturday, March 30, 2013
   90 Volunteers Needed!
Great for community service and to start the season off with a bang!

   Register for This Project
Come enjoy early spring at Pella Crossing! It is close to Boulder and
Longmont and is one of the most beautiful and popular Boulder County
Open Space properties. The site is adjacent to the Saint Vrain River
and is a series of ponds that support wetland habitat, great views,
and abundant bird life. The property is also the location for WRV's
first volunteer project back in 1999. So please join us as we add
another chapter to WRV's history at Pella Crossing.

   HISTORY

There are several ponds on site, all reclaimed gravel quarries that
are now providing excellent wildlife habitat. Steep banks and wind
driven waves are causing erosion which has degraded habitat along a
few sections of shoreline. The ponds we will be restoring this year
are Dragonfly and Poplar Ponds. This is a great example of how sand &
gravel quarries can be restored into wildlife habitat and then into
   space for public recreation.

   VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
Volunteers will plant hundreds of willows and install coir log
barriers to retain soil and protect the willows along the shore. The
coir logs provide short term protection and the willows will stabilize
the pond bank long term. Volunteers will also install wire cages
around cottonwood trees to protect them from beavers, and remove small
   invasive Russian olive trees.

   COME ON AND JOIN US

Minimum Age: 14 accompanied by an adult

Great for youth groups & school community service!

The end of March will be the perfect time to get outdoors to plant and
celebrate spring with the WRV community!
