   Well, there's this theory that emotions are fast lane to life   
   preserving reactions.   
      
   When a lion jumps on you, you'd better NOT think about it, and try to   
   build an intelligent response. Just duck! Now!   
      
   For this, you need to identify quickly a situation, even it is   
   sometime erroneously, and to react quickly with a preprogrammed   
   response: an emotional response.   
      
   It's just a tad more elaborated than plain reflex responses: the   
   stimulus of an emotion and its response are learned.
