   Anees,

Agent-based systems are very last century.

How about writing a program that crawls something like citeseer or a
patent database and finds mentions of something simple (say chemical
names) and tries to establish what keywords are associated to those
   things.

Or build a search engine that searches patents using the link structure
of references. Or academic articles with the same intent.

Or a system that builds a map of people in science embedded in a
conceptual space based on what they work on.

Russell also made a good suggestion that you can try to replicate some
published work. There is some good work, for instance, in time series
clustering done by people at Universty of California at Riverside. If
you could replicate or exend that work, that would be an excellent
final year project. Search for 'SAX, time series' to find out more.
