If you are building an       expert system, I'd assume that somewhere in your process you are doing       knowledge acquisition from one or more subject-matter experts. This may       be the key distinguishing factor from a "normal" software engineering       project. You will want to involve the user in your testing cycles, so       that you are not just testing "external behavior", but making sure the       reasoning processes make sense to the SME (meaning you also hopefully       have some way to present the reasoning processes to the SME in a       comprehensible form). In expert systems I have been in on, we followed       a spiral model, so we could get a small piece of the system initially       working and then incrementally add knowledge/capabilities. But I       imagine other SE approaches would work well, too.              Randy Jones              [ comp.ai is moderated.
