   It doesn't matter how you cast your fitness.   
      
   The fact is that an inherent property of all evolutionary algorithms   
   is that they ultimately assign, through mechanisms large and small, a   
   probability of survival and then explore that probability density.   
      
   Thus, regardless of the apparent formulation of fitness, evolution is   
   restating this fitness as a scalar.
