   Actually, humans are remarkably robust in the face of contradictory   
   knowledge.  Witness the fact that people manage to get up in the   
   morning and find breakfast even though stuff was put away in a   
   different spot.   
      
   I think it is a matter of experience.  Until you have been dragged   
   through the much resulting from a large rules-based system it is   
   really hard to believe just how subtly and pervasively bad life can   
   be.
