My own experience       with machine learning in UK academia told me that when it comes to       numerical algorithms, machine learners tend to be oblivious towards       key concepts, like numerical stability (of course, that means that NOT       knowing anything about numerical analysis is NOT going to hurt your       chances of getting in. In the longer run, however, you would be better       off with an understanding of this field).              I think these areas go well together:              machine learning       numerical analysis       functional language programming (e.g. C, Pascal, Fortran) (any one       really, and OOP is not required)       linear algebra/geometry       probability theory              Best regards,              Stefan W.
