Java is used in lots of areas of AI, from rule based systems to evolutionary
   algorithms to neural nets.

Two recent books worth looking at are Dr Ghanea-Hercock's book on Java and
genetic algorithms (see http://www.techbookreport.com/AIIndex.html for a
review), and Jess In Action (Java rule based systems)
   ).

On a more general note, there's also an online book on Java and AI by Mark
   Watson (http://www.markwatson.com/opencontent/).

   All the best,
