We used this book in class:
Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques, Second
   Edition
by Ian H. Witten (Author), Eibe Frank (Author)

It takes a theoretical approach to Data Mining. It will give you a
good background for doing data mining. It takes the time to explain
statistical functions and data mining algorithms.
