Another simple nature-inspired MAS framework that has been around
for quite a while goes under the name of the "Pursuit problem",
where "predator" agents moving collaboratively try to trap a
"prey" agent, moving on some kind of grid. Eg. lions vs a gazelle.

While simple and abstract, it was used extensively in the late 80's
and 90's to explore collaborative problem solving under various
assumptions about organisation and communication, etc. Nowadays
it's still often used in more advance studies, e.g. on learning.
For basic information, try looking at survey papers or papers more
than 10 years old on "distributed problem solving" or "DAI".

For nature-inspired MAS in general, you'll find many interesting
things under the search topic "Artificial Life", e.g. flocking
behaviour of birds. There's also the slightly less natural MAS
Robot Soccer, under the banner of "Robocup" + "simulation league".
