Writing an expert system can be as complex or easy as the domain
   requires.
If you are completely new to the process and are looking for something
to understand the expert system, it would make sense that you start
with PROLOG. It is a easy to use programming language that can be
easily used to make simple if...then rule based expert systems. Since
PROLOG handles unification (lookup: unification algorithm)
automatically, it is a lot easier to make (SIMPLE) a rule based expert
   system in PROLOG.

Let us know how it goes
