   I think it depends a bit on what kind of AI you are thinking about.   
   I believe you can find different toy problems for decision making,   
   prediction, learning etc. (And of course these "categories" are not   
   ruling each other out but may be largely overlapping.)   
      
   As already pointed out in another post here, "simple" and "AI"   
   together might be considered an oxymoron by some. However, one can think   
   of the term "AI" more broadly and just skip these hesitations.   
      
   One simple toy problem - used quite often, I think - is to predict the   
   outcome of coin tosses (of a biased coin) or something similar. This is   
   of course not a very sophisticated or complex thing to do but I guess   
   that was the whole point...
