   That assumption is unfounded.  Java programs still have a moderate   
   penalty in terms of memory usage, but generally have little or no   
   penalty in terms of run-time.   
      
   Take for example Jruby, the Java implementation of Ruby.  It is   
   generally *faster* than the C implementation.
