   Have you thought about medical image analysis?  My friend is using AI   
   to save the lives of unborn babies by analysing ultrasound scans -- he   
   gets to do cool AI that actually works; a warm glow of satisfaction   
   from doing something useful; and apparently his sex appeal has   
   increased tenfold now he's moved from being 'Hi I'm John, I'm a   
   computer scientist' to 'Hi I'm John, I help to save babies lives'  :)
