   This is -- IMHO -- the crux of the "problem". Can an emergent property   
   of a complex system be re-created using reductionist approaches. ;-)

   Maybe this is another part of the problem. Being unpredictable in   
   some degree is what AI and AL systems are  all about.   
   If some are trying to AVOID that, they may not be moving toward the goal. ;-)
