   Exchange of information, groups goals, roles, etc., are some of the   
   major topics in the field of "multi-agent systems".  There are   
   approaches that are very theoretical and logically oriented, and some   
   that are more "knowledge-based", and lots in between.  I would do a   
   search for multi-agent systems.  In particular you might want to look at   
   papers in the proceedings of the AAMAS conference (autonomous agents and   
   multi agent systems).
