The key words that you need are       planar layout, planarization and graph layout.              A quick google indicates that there are some excellent references on       the subject (if you use planar layout or planarization as the search).              Spring layout as a search gives you many references to variants on the       Kamada-style algorithms such as are used in the well-known Java spring       layout demo, but doesn't give you information on other layout and       planarization algorithms.              [ comp.ai is moderated.
