   You probably need an additional input to say whether or not a value is   
   "real".   
      
   If you are looking at nonscalar variables, then missing values can just   
   be represented by a particular value such as the string "Missing".  But   
   with scalars, particularly numbers, you have to use another channel to   
   communicate information about whether a value is present.
