Well, if you are unfamiliar with the inverted pendulum balancing system, a
good place to start might be the PID mathematical model -- this would help
you understand the basic components of the system and their relationships.
Translating this to a fuzzy model, of course, requires and understanding of
fuzzy logic and fuzzy systems since there is no obviously direct
correspondence between the mathematical model and the fuzzy representation.
For references in the literature, I would suggest starting with a seldom
referenced and very much under-appreciated book by Ted and Jill Heske,
"Fuzzy Logic for Real World Design" (Annabooks, ISBN 0-929392-24-8),
Chapter 5, 'Fuzzy Engineering II' has a complete discussion of the both the
mathematical as well as fuzzy model for the inverted pendulum.

   Good luck,
   Earl
