   rounding for a reduced precision... if the precision were reduced only by

   But now I've found another Wikipedia article which clarified things for   
   me. It turns out that rounding ties to odd does have one important   
   benefit. It means that the rounding of ties, at least, will never result   
   in the exponent of the result changing.   
      
   Since rounding to nearest when it isn't a tie can still change the   
   exponent, it's not clear to me that this is all that important. Rounding   
   to even or to odd both have the virtue of avoiding bias, of course.
