      In "Undocumented DOS, Second Edition" by Andrew   
   Schulman, et. al., ISBN 0-201-63287-X; the authors   
   analyze finding the environment.  Their program uses   
   four different methods to locate environments, including   
   the master and active environments.  Their programs   
   were called MSTENVP.C and ENVEDT.C.
